Good to know
What is semaglutide?+
A GLP-1 receptor agonist originally developed for type 2 diabetes (Ozempic), approved at higher doses for chronic weight management (Wegovy). It works by slowing gastric emptying and reducing appetite.
Where do these weight-loss numbers come from?+
The STEP 1 trial (Wilding et al., NEJM 2021) reported mean ~15% body-weight loss at 68 weeks on 2.4 mg/week semaglutide. Earlier-tier percentages come from the same study's titration timeline.
Who shouldn't take semaglutide?+
People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, MEN2, pregnancy, or severe GI disease. Always screen with a licensed clinician — never start or titrate without medical oversight.
